Project Management for Professional Engineers
"This team from the University of Canterbury sought to determine which particular components of project management are important for Professional Engineers. The results showed unequivocally that project management is a core component of professional engineering practice. Further, that of the various sub-topics within the project management body of knowledge, project planning is the most important, as well as Project Costing and Project Monitoring. This project has the potential to improve the process for training graduate engineers, and in the longer term result in more effective Professional Engineers. "

"Caroline has been an active member of the Central Branch Committee throughout 2009 and 2010 as the Professional Development Coordinator. Caroline is a professional educator and has brought a wealth of knowledge and maturity to the activities of PMINZ in this area.
In 2009, Caroline managed the transition from PMBOK V3 to PMBOK V4, including the restructure and revision of Study Group material to reflect the change and arranging seminars to explain and promote the new standard . She Set up a library of study resources and making it available to members, and "raised the bar" in terms of the professionalism of the delivery of the Wellington based Study Group Sessions.
During 2010, Caroline has extended the PMINZ capability, in terms of Professional Development, by establishing a pilot programme for mentoring in the Wellington Region. This has involved matching project management professionals, with relevant knowledge and experience, to PMINZ members who are seeking to benefit from some guidance and mentoring. "

"Della works for Livestock Improvement (LIC), one of the largest, integrated dairy herd improvements organisations in the world. Della's promotion from Project Assistant to Junior Project Manager 18 months ago, is a result of her determinedly and consistently expressing an unusual and unique blend of natural and technical ability to lead and influence projects. She has earned the respect and admiration of her sponsors, business owners and teams, and her peers. This is a result of her proactive sharing of experience and ideas and support for other members of the team, as well as contributing to development of best practise project management techniques for LIC.
As her experience and confidence has grown, so too her contribution to the team - constructively focusing on improving delivery of project and PMO outcomes, rather than personal interest. Della is not afraid to challenge assumptions and ‘hold the line' with senior managers to ensure project risk is minimised, resulting in her earning the trust and respect of her team, her business owners and her sponsors.
Della's delivery has resulted in her being regarded as a trusted counsel and advisor in all things to do with project delivery. "

Wellington City Council
"Currently at the Wellington City Council, Byron has demonstrated successful project leadership by managing a complex and comprehensive $400 million programme of projects to upgrade 2,300 Wellington homes to be safe, secure and of a good standard for modern living. Byron is a role model and constant champion of project management within the Wellington City Council. Through his actions and results he has demonstrated the benefits of proven project disciplines and controls in a complex operating environment. Byron has developed and implemented a project management frame for the Council based on the PMBOK, specifically tailored for multi-faceted building redevelopment projects enabling all specific projects to be managed in a controlled from initiation through to closeout in a standardised manner. He has successfully initiated and is now leading a unique and complex programme of projects which are delivering to the agreed programme outcomes in a consistent and professional manner."

"SmartGate is an automated self-processing option for international passengers arriving in Auckland and Wellington Airports. It uses electronic information in the ePassport and sophisticated facial recognition technology to perform the customs and immigration checks that are usually done by Customs officers. SmartGate integrates with existing border processes and information systems, and delivers tangible improvements to passenger queuing times and perceptions of duplicated efforts. In addition, streamlined (or ‘hidden') processes mean that compliant passengers pass through passport control with minimal intervention. This has simplified arrivals processing, particularly for biosecurity clearance, and improved the ability to undertake risk assessments. Around a ¼ million passengers have used SmartGate in its first 6 months of operation in Auckland, with 94% of those surveyed rating it 9 or 10 out of 10."
